A global network of spaces in which activists converge to create, collaborate and celebrate.

Book One Of Our Flagship Spaces

Bertha House is home for individuals and collectives working to make a difference in their communities. Nestled in Mowbray, Cape Town, South Africa, this historically significant and centrally located space serves as a hub where a diverse array of activists, educators, organizers, storytellers and other social actors can congregate, collaborate and learn together.
.

Bertha Retreat is a rural retreat and convening space
45 minutes outside of Cape Town on Boschendal wine farm. At the Retreat, Bertha Foundation grantees, NGOs, partner organizations, the surrounding communities and other users can meet to connect, work, strategize and reflect. Bertha Retreat includes accommodation for 34 people, conferencing facilities and meeting rooms, a micro-farming and food production project and a community resource centre.

About Bertha Spaces

Bertha Spaces is a program of Bertha Foundation, a global human rights foundation working to bring about social and economic justice and human rights for all.

This program was created to address the lack of access to physical spaces and programs that center activists and communities; to amplify the work of activists working toward a common cause by facilitating connections, purposeful relationships and ongoing collaboration; and to intentionally and meaningfully connect the existing spaces within the Bertha grantee network.

The Bertha Spaces program is based on the theory that when activists convene and collaborate on an ongoing and consistent basis, the impact of their work increases. Bertha Spaces creates the environment and programs to support this vital work and facilitate powerful connections and continued opportunities for activists and local communities to learn from each other, share resources and connect.

Bertha Spaces practices are informed by the Bertha Foundation’s deep commitment to human rights and social justice, and the inherent value of in-person connection to advance these values; the work of Bertha Foundation’s global network of grantees; and intentionality around environmentally sustainable practices, fair labor practices and creating opportunities for local communities.

Our work is grounded in our values of intentionality, collaboration and community.

Rates and Pricing Guide

At Bertha Spaces our mission is to create safe and inclusive spaces where communities and activists work together to build more just cities, countries and planet. In recognition of the fact that many of these groups have differing financial resources we use a sliding-scale rates and pricing system. By paying what you can afford you are enabling sustainable provision of space to others at significantly reduced rates.

To determine the precise costs involved in using one of our spaces, please first identify which sliding scale category your group falls in, then use this category to find more information below on rates at each space.

Sliding Scale

Standard Rate: Our Standard Rate remains more affordable than comparable commercial alternatives and is targeted at larger non- profit groups, philanthropic organizations, academic institutions, and social enterprises with an annual budget or annual revenue of R12 million or more.

Middle Rate: Our Middle Rate applies to medium-sized non-profit organizations or initiatives with lower budgets but with some resources to cover event fees. These groups receive an additional 20% off bookings at Bertha Retreat’s 24-hour retreat and accommodation packages. To qualify groups must have an annual budget of R12 million or less.

Low Rate: Our Low Rate applies to smaller non-profit organizations with more constrained budgets. These groups receive 40% off Bertha Retreat’s 24-hour Retreat and Accommodation packages, and are exempt from venue rental fees at Bertha House. To qualify for this discount groups must have a budget of R3 million or less per year.

Ts and Cs: All groups making bookings regardless of sliding-scale selection must align with our values and code of conduct. Prices valid from 1 June 2024, and are subject to change.
